Boys, as the old sing-song goes, are made of slugs, snails and puppy dogs tails, so from the day they are born, boys are encouraged to play with toys that develop construction, sporting or outdoor skills. The range of toys for little boys therefore includes the quintessential building toy, Lego, as well as mechanical toys like racing cars, trucks and “choo-choo” trains.
As little guys get older, they develop a fascination for cartoon characters with superpowers, like Spiderman, Batman and more recently, Ben 10, who can acquire alien superpowers by using the Omnitrix. Dress up costumes are therefore popular, as well as figurines, and themed toys such as the Lego Star Wars range. Playing games on consoles like PlayStation are also popular for guys of any age, especially now that boys can play anything from RPG’s to Guitar Hero.
From a young age, and into their teenager years, despite becoming aware of girls and their hormones, boys often develop a keen interest in sport, especially rugby, cricket and soccer, whose players become idolised as sporting heroes. So whether they support the Sharks or the Bulls, Manchester United or Liverpool, sporting magazines, equipment and team paraphernalia remain popular choices for boys.
